Plastic products have long been integrated into every aspect of daily life and industrial production. Boasting light weight, sturdiness, waterproof and anti-corrosion properties as well as cost-effectiveness, plastics stand among the most vital synthetic materials of modern society. They are widely applied in household goods, food packaging, electronics, transportation, medical care, manufacturing and many other sectors, serving as an irreplaceable foundational material driving the advancement of modern civilization.

Many people hold a one-sided view that plastics are merely cheap daily supplies. In fact, plastics are polymer materials manufactured by heating and pressurizing synthetic resin as the primary base material together with stable, eco-friendly additives. Their defining feature is strong plasticity—they can be processed into thin films, hard casings, pipes, containers, special-shaped components and countless other forms to fit diverse usage demands.

Compared with traditional materials such as wood, glass and metal, plastics have prominent advantages. First, their light weight eases handling and transportation burdens. Second, they resist acids, alkalis and rust, delivering a longer service life in humid and harsh environments. In addition, their outstanding insulating properties make them essential protective materials for electronic appliances and mechanical equipment. Moreover, plastics allow efficient mass standardized molding with controllable energy consumption, greatly cutting production costs of various goods.

By general industrial classification, plastics fall into two main categories: thermoplastics and thermosetting plastics. Thermoplastics can be reheated, reshaped and recycled. Common examples include plastic bottles, food storage boxes, organizers and packaging films, which also enjoy the highest recycling rates. Thermosetting plastics maintain stable structures once formed and cannot be remelted or reshaped. Featuring high hardness and heat resistance, they are widely used in electrical insulation parts, industrial heat-insulating components, mechanical housings and other professional applications.

Advancements in technology have helped plastics break free from the stereotype of low-end, cheap materials. Nowadays, food-grade, medical-grade and high-temperature resistant engineering plastics are widely available, all complying with strict safety testing standards. They can safely hold food and be made into infant supplies, while also meeting the rigorous requirements of high-end industries and precision equipment.

A rational understanding of plastics’ material properties and practical value helps eliminate biased misconceptions. Learning to use and dispose of plastic products properly enables us to enjoy the convenience brought by modern materials while embracing eco-friendly living concepts.
